Arrived in Taipei on Tuesday and met up with good friend and former colleague Mike Lee. Mike and I were colleagues at Banana Republic back in the day, but since then he's moved to Taiwan and teaches "American English" in the South. Thanks to Mike for making the 4-hour bus trip up to Taipei for dinner and drinks. It was great to catch up. Dinner at Xiao Fei Yang (Little Sheep), followed by drinks at Stream...

We toured the then-tallest building in the world, the Taipei 101 office tower last June. The top of which is a giant damper that sways to counter-act any movement of the building in the event of an earthquake, pretty common in Taiwan. The attached article explains this in better detail, but check out the video of the damper in action during the recent Sechuan earthquake. Pretty exciting stuff, but hey - it worked! Here's the video: Finally, a link to the article on Gizmodo that explains...

At this point I don't have much else to add about my trip to Southeast Asia (including Taiwan and Japan, which aren't technically in that area but you get the picture). I had planned on writing two more posts about general impressions of Vietnam and another on hotels and such, but lost interest and have moved on to other things. I'll continue to add photos to the site, but I have turned off the notifications so check back from time to time to see the new photo albums. I had a great trip, an...

Taipei 101 is not a lesson in the capital of Taiwan, but is the name of a building that currently holds the title of "Tallest Building in the World." Note: this title is disputed with a building in Dubai called Burj Dubai, but they do concede that Taipei 101 is taller. Taipei 101 holds records for: Tallest structure: 1,671 feet. Higest structural roof: 1,474 feet. Highest occupied floor: 1,441 feet. Fastest building elevator: 37.5 miles per hour. About that last fact, the elevator wil...
