Paris in December

Christmas, Europe, France, Guides, Paris

We were in Paris for a few days just before Christmas last year. We expected the city to be a riot of holiday cheers, but were somewhat disappointed. We still managed to do a fair amount of walking, eating and shopping, so not a total loss. It was still Paris, though. Beautiful anytime of the year. This post has 8 photos.

Taking a Spin with the New Zoom Lens

HDR, New York City, Photography

I finally bought a real zoom lens on Friday, the Nikkor 70-300mm f4.5 telephoto. My walking around lens is the excellent Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8, but I've been wanting a really long lens for a while. On an FX camera, you don't get the extreme enlargement of a DX, but at 300mm its plenty of zoom. This post has three photos.

We stayed in New York for July 4 this year, and went to the roof to watch the annual Macy's Fireworks Spectacular. Our building is on 26th street in Chelsea and has a terrific view of the fireworks barges on the Hudson River about a mile away. The weather this year was perfect; no wind, 80 degrees and hardly a cloud in the sky. This post contains 4 photos.

The Giant Yellow Rubber Duck of Hong Kong

Asia, China, Hong Kong

Hong Kong's Victoria Harbor has recently been host to artist Florentijn Hofman's aptly-titled floating art exhibit, "Rubber Duck." The 16.5-meter high inflatable bath toy has been on exhibition since May 2, and famously deflated a few weeks ago after being buffeted about in late-spring storm. Today the duck is moored to the harbor on the Kowloon side, but still a big draw against its highly photogenic background. I had to fight quite the crowds, including many small children, to get this photo.

10 Years of Blogging

I first registered the web domain in 1997, and have had a website of some kind since 1998. I created a "weblog" feature in March 2003, and posted the first entry on March 12, 2003. 10 years and over 2,500 entries later, is still going strong. There's a link to the first post ever, and a snapshot of what looked like in 2003. Can you name the handsome man in the photo? (hint: its not me).

After the Snow: The Flatiron Building

New York City, Snow

I'm still going through a bunch of post-blizzard photos from last week's snow storm. Bryan Jones commented that he could never tire of photographing the Flatiron Building, and apparently I agree as I have dozens of photos of that landmark in this set alone. Aside from the Empire State Building, its easily the most notable landmark in my neighborhood, and highly photogenic as well. This photo was taken right as the skies cleared but before all the snow started melting. The LED Bucky Ball art installation can be seen in the foreground, although its much more interesting at night. This post has one photo.

A New York City Snow Storm

HDR, New York City, Snow

The much-hyped Blizzard of 2013 arrived yesterday and blanketed the city with about a foot of snow (neighbors to the north and across New England got 30 inches or more). By 11AM on Saturday, the snow had stopped and the sun had re-appeared. It was still cold and gusty, but the snow was already during into an inconvenient mush, and much of the trees and surrounding buildings had started to thaw. I walked over to Madison Square Park to snap a few photos, and found the park full of kids, dogs and photographers. This post has two photos.

A Cold, Dreary January Afternoon in New York City

HDR, New York City, Photography

It's been cold and wintry in New York of late. Not unusually so, but once the holidays have past it seems colder, drearier, and the winds don't stop. I went to the roof to look around and took this photo looking northwest toward Hell's Kitchen. Its a fine photo, but one I've taken many times before. In fact, I've decided to "retire" this view as I'm afraid it has become a cliche. Call it a New Year's resolution, starting after this one. This post has one photo.

HDR, Holidays, Kansas City, Snow

I had a few 2012 year-in-review recaps in mind, but got terribly busy with a year-end travel schedule. Our holiday travel to Kansas was stymied by two flight cancellations and over 16 hours in delays, but we finally made it for the New Year. It's a Snowy Day at Newark Airport

Christmas, Holidays, Snow, US Travel

We had a 2:50PM flight out of Newark today, a second attempt after our Christmas flight to Kansas City was canceled on December 21 (you don't have a lot of options when that happens). Because of a pending snowstorm, I changed our flight to 9AM in hopes of departing before the storm. We barely made the flight due to unbelievably long security line, but rolled out around 9:15. By 9:30 we were back at the gate due to a maintenance issue, and by 10:30 this flight was canceled. We quickly rebooked to our original 2:50 flight, but with snow coming down harder and harder, its anyone's guess. This post has one photo.

Multiplicity: Three of a Kind Take 2

Multiplicity, Photography, Pixelmator

About this time last year I shot a version of this photo and edited it in Acorn (a photo editor). I tried it again today using Photoshop and the result is below. Last time I used ambient room lighting which was tricky but I think I like the result better despite the challenges of the light changing all the time. There was actually a fourth me shot, but when I tried to composite it, it wouldn't fit into the photo in a remotely plausible way so I left it out. This post has one photo.
