Jayhawk Basketball Camp
Jayhawks, The Occhipintos

My nephew Brennan, resident of Lawrence, KS, recently attended at Jayhawks basketball camp where he took this photo. For the uninformed, that's Kansas Coach Bill Self, posing next to the 2008 NCAA championship trophy, and the net cut down after the game.  For a rabid Jayhawks fan like Brennan, you can imagine the excitement...

Kansas Defeats Memphis 75-68 in Overtime to Win NCAA Title
Jayhawks

Not much more to say other than what I've said in the title. In a welcome change of fate, poor free throw shooting doomed a team other than the Jayhawks. The story of the game, however, is what will likely be remembered as the most important shot in recent Kansas history, Chalmers' 3 pointer to tie the game with 2 seconds remaining. Kansas was down by 9 and started the usually annoying desperation maneuver of intentionally fouling to send their opponent to the line. This time, however, Memph...

Coaching, Preparation Overcome in Contest of Athleticism
Jayhawks

Of course I'm talking about the triumph of the New York City Ballet's interpretation of Igor Stravensky's Duo Concertant as part of the visiting company's tribute to San Francisco's 75 anniversary. I say triumph because the work also performed by the National Ballet of Canada and Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, while novel and ingenious, lacked the skill and precision of the New York duo. All of this was happening as KU routed North Carolina in the NCAA Final Four semi-finals in San Antonio. Turn...

Kansas Holds off Pesky Davidson for Final 4 Bid!
Jayhawks

I don't usually include sports commentary on this blog, except when it relates to local teams done well. Earlier I went to KU's unlikely Orange Bowl win in Miami. This year I'm happy to report that Kansas was the final Number 1 seed to earn a Final Four berth next weekend in San Antonio. Making history, this is the first time in tournament history that all four top seeds made the Final Four. Up next is the nation's top rated team, North Carolina. Former coach Roy Williams' matchup should ma...

Grudgingly Deserved...
Jayhawks

KU was on quite a winning streak, 20-0 and closing in on Memphis for the number 1 spot atop the polls. That is until they visited Manhattan to take on the nearly unranked Wildcats. Rankings don't seem to matter much whenever KU plays K-State, or for that matter, Missouri, Iowa State or even lowly Nebraska. These Big 12 (Big 8) rivalries run pretty deep. KU got flat out-played and out-coached. Perhaps a different result when the Wildcats travel to Lawrence. The loss aside, KU is still in gre...

Errands, Errata and the BCS Championship
Jayhawks, Marco Island, US Travel

Got up at 5:00am today to help send off two sets of travelers headed back to Lawrence, KS. The Hustons were driving to Orlando to catch their flight to KCI, and the Occhipintos were driving north toward Tennesse, the halfway point on their two-day drive back to Lawrence. For my part, I spent the day folding towels and doing laundry, pausing long enough only to attempt finishing the orange juice and the chocolate cream pie. So much for the perenial new year resolution about eating better. I ...

The day after...
Jayhawks, Marco Island, US Travel

Yesterday we got back from the Orange Bowl about 3:00 AM local time and then slept until about noon. The long drive back from Kansas, the NYE party the night after, the redeye the night after that then the all day outdoor Orange Bowl festivities, the game and subsequent drive left me feeling, well a bit tired. We played football on the beach today with my nephew and his friends for about 2 hours. I don't do a bunch of sprinting and jumping in my day to day activities and I'm feeling that al...

Rock Out with Your Hawk Out: 2008 Orange Bowl
Jayhawks, Marco Island, US Travel

Kansas 24 Virginia Tech 21 Attended the Orange Bowl in Miami tonight, and had a great time. The weather was less than perfect, pretty chilly with some occasional rain but not bad once the game started. I met up with my sister and her family who drove from Kansas two days ago (who would drive so far?). The pre-game tailgate party was a bit much, you basically pay $20 to enter a parking lot and enjoy really loud and mediocre local rock bands, and the opportunity to buy expensive food and $7 b...

Welcome to Miami - Bundle up!
Jayhawks, US Travel

I'm in Miami, Florida at the moment, here to attend the 2008 Orange Bowl between the Kansas Jayhawks and the dreaded Virginia Tech Hokies. More on that later. I'm not traveling with a camera this time, just my iPhone. Hopefully the point can still get across... I've decided I like Miami. Its a sort of like a warm-weather facsimile of New York, and by that I mean If you've ever received a fax, its usually crooked and hard to read. its like New York, or it would like to be, but not quite. ...
