Visit to the Richard Nixon Presidential Library
Los Angeles, Museums, National Parks, US Travel

A few weeks ago we were in Chino Hills, California to attend a wedding and had a few hours to kill on a Sunday before the ceremony. Consulting a map I was surprised to learn that the Richard Nixon Presidential Library was only about 25 minutes away in Yorba Linda. Nixon is an interesting figure, most known for his disgraceful exit following the Watergate scandal, but he did have a notable political career and was an accomplished diplomat before his presidency imploded. I was curious to see how h...

13 Years of Yosemite
National Parks, Yosemite

This past weekend we enjoyed our 13th annual summer camping trip in Yosemite National Park. The weather was perfect, with warm sunny days and cool nights. Last year we saw the most water in all the years I've been to Yosemite, but this year we saw the least. Yosemite Falls, Bridal Veil falls and the Merced River were nearly bone dry. Nevertheless, a good time was had by all in attendance. We flew into San Francisco Thursday night, and after many delays and baggage woes, finally go to the hotel...

Yosemite 13 Finale: Save the Date - July 20!
National Parks, Yosemite

This morning I booked the Hodgdon Meadow campground for what will likely be the last of the annual Yosemite trips. 13 years feels like a good run, but with everyone's busy lives and our relocation to the east coast, the logistics have become more complicated and the novelty has worn a bit thin. I'm hoping we have a big turn out and leave with a bang, so please mark your calendars accordingly; arrive on Friday July 20 and depart on Sunday July 22. More details to follow, but look for the official...

If you're not interested in Yosemite, feel free to ignore this message... Hard to believe, but its that time of the year to start thinking about booking our annual trip to Yosemite. Daily Photo: The John Day Fossil Beds
Daily Photo, National Monument, National Parks

When I started my 2007 Epic Tour of National Parks, I had never heard of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. In fact, I had no plans to stop there until I saw it on the map between Crater Lake National Park and Yellowstone. I only stopped there for a few minutes, but the landscape was truly unique and breathtaking. The striated rock formations and their colors were simply amazing. Its unlikely you may find yourself in the area, but I highly recommend it. Me at the John Day Fossil Beds...

Daily Photo: The Snow Mountain Wilderness
Daily Photo, Mendocino National Forest, National Parks, Snow Mountain

When I lived in San Francisco, one of my favorite outdoor getaway destinations was the Snow Mountain Wilderness within the Mendocino National Forest (my other favorite was Lassen National Park). Snow Mountain is aptly named, as its a mountain, and its covered by snow year-round. My friend Tod and I hiked to this same spot a few times. The first time it snowed about a foot overnight despite being late Spring. The second time was amazingly clear, though the winds topped nearly 100 MPH that night. ...

Daily Photo: Crater Lake National Park
Crater Lake, Daily Photo, National Parks

In the fall of 2007, I embarked on an Epic Tour of National Parks, which included a stop in Oregon's Crater Lake National Park. It was late August, and the park was warm, mostly free of snow and the air was crystal clear and cloud-free. Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the US, and the second-deepest in North America (number 9 worldwide). Filled with runoff from the nearby peaks, the constantly-cold lake produces colors are like nothing you've ever seen. Near the end of my visit, I did what peo...

Daily Photo, National Parks

In 2007, I set out alone in my Honda CRV for a multi-state, international tour of North America's National Parks. After visiting Grand Tetons and Yellowstone, I headed north to Montana's Glacier National Park. Straddling the border with Canada, Glacier doesn't get the traffic of its neighbors to the South, but has no shortage of amazing landscapes, and, as its name implies, glaciers. See them soon, however, as they're vanishing at an alarming rate. Glacier National Park (click to enlarge) R...

The Dangers of Climbing Half Dome
National Parks, Yosemite

This morning I read that on Sunday, July 31, a 26 year old woman from San Ramon, California fell over 600 feet to her death while descending the perilous cables atop the summit of Half Dome. This is the 14th fatality in Yosemite National Park this year, but the only on Half Dome (two weeks ago three hikers ignored warnings and ventured beyond the safety barriers above Vernal Falls, and paid for this costly lapse of judgment with their lives). These deaths are tragic, and serve as a sobering re...

This past weekend we celebrated 12 years of Yosemite with our annual trip to California's most famous and most visited National Park. Attendance was lighter this year with around 20 in total, but great weather, great friends, great food and the most incredible water falls I've seen in years made for a terrific weekend trip. We spent the long Memorial Day weekend in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as part of our emerging "Great Cities of the US" tour of 2011, having already visited Chicago, Las Vegas, San Francisco, and Honolulu (I just made that up, we have no such plan). Philadelphia is an easy two-hour drive from New York, so we took the train out to the Chiang House in Congers, picked up the CRV and headed south to Pennsylvania. Terrific Day Hikes in Yosemite National Park
National Parks, Video, Yosemite

Below is embedded another terrific video from the Yosemite National Park YouTube channel.  You can visit the channel directly here.  The Ranger in this video highlights three of the more popular "strenuous" day hikes in Yosemite Valley.  The quotes here are simply an attribution, and I would agree these are strenuous, but not nearly as strenuous as doing Half Dome.  I've done two of these three many times. The Story Behind the Photo
National Parks, Photography, Yosemite

Probably one of the more challenging feats during the annual Yosemite trip is getting everyone in one spot for the group photo.  This usually involves me finding a suitable location, and sending a runner, or photographer's assistant, to grudgingly gather weary campers on a Sunday morning.  At this point most people are trying to break camp, and most of the ladies are appalled at an early morning photo after no shower for 3 days.  However, the result is usually worth the effort and is a useful re...

Lake Louise, Alberta: Yeah, Its Cold
Canada, National Parks, Travelogue

Today we drove up from Banff to Johnston Canyon (frozen solid) to Lake Louise. We had hoped to admire the glaciers and beautiful moraine lake, but the lake, not unlike the glaciers, was also frozen. We did stop by the Fairmont Lake Louise where they had constructed remarkable ice sculptures on the lake, including a very large and strangely elaborate Patron Tequila "monument". Just got back from a quick backpack trip into the Snow Mountain Wilderness, part of the Mendocino National Forest. Years ago, Tod and I climbed the East Peak of Snow Mountain, and this year we climbed the West Peak. The mountain is called Snow Mountain because of the prevalence of snow deep into the Summer.
