Daily Photo: The Louvre at Sunset
Daily Photo, Europe, France, Museums, Paris

Despite traveling to Paris many times, I don't think I could ever get tired of it. The nice part about going to a great city like Paris more than once is you don't feel as compelled to do all the big touristy things on subsequent visits. During our last trip, we did a lot more dining and hanging out than sightseeing. Nonetheless, we did visit the Louvre, but only because we had bought the city's Museum Pass (an excellent bargain). I snapped this photo around sunset one evening as we were doing a...

Daily Photo: Montmartre from Notre Dame
Daily Photo, Europe, France, Paris

On my third trip to Paris, the stairs to the top of Notre Dame were finally open to the bell tower. It was a worthwhile hike, even on an otherwise cloudy day. This photo was featured in the National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest Editor's Gallery, but alas didn't win me a prize. A great view of the Sacre du Couer from the top of Notre Dame (click to enlarge)...

Highlighted Travel Photos: Paris from Notre Dame
Europe, France, Paris, Photography

Note from March 2011: Lately I've been revisiting a number of these travel photos, retouching and re-processing them a bit. I know a great deal more about how to fine-tune the camera's output, but also tastes change. I'll repost some more in the next few days. Since I finally got around to posting pictures from Paris, here's one from the top of Notre Dame.  This was my third trip to Paris and on each of the previous, it wasn't possible to go to the top of the church due to construction.  The ...

Last Day in Paris: Versailles and the Sacré-Coeur
Europe, France, Museums, Paris, Travelogue

Our last day in Paris was another busy one. In hindsight, we probably planned our visit to Paris about one day shorter than necessary. However, adding another day would likely result in us adding even more stuff to do and see. To be honest, when I booked the return train to London, I had the dates wrong in my head and had us returning to England a day earlier than necessary. Since the tickets weren't changeable or refundable, we decided to add a visit to Bath (UK) which turned out to be well wor...

Touring Paris - Day 4: Notre Dame, Eiffel Tower & The Louvre
Europe, France, Museums, Paris, Travelogue

Day 4 in Paris was the Parisian chamber of commerce tourist greatest hits day. As such this post is primarily pictures as they speak for themselves. The weather had been mostly gray and gloomy all week, but the forecast for this day was calling for sunny and warm skies. The plan was to get up early to hit the Eiffel Tower before the crowds, then do other things from there. At 9:30AM, the fog was just lifting off the ground and there was no blue sky in sight. So, change of plans, we decided to wa...

Touring Paris - Day 3: Arc d Triomphe, Luxembourg Gardens
Europe, France, Paris, Travelogue

Day 3 was a pretty light touring day, pretty much sticking to our tour bus route with stops at the Arc d Triomphe, the Champs Elysees, the Luxembourg Gardens and other leisurely stops along the way. Before I get too far into that, I wanted to clarify some comments I made yesterday about the Paris Metro employees. This wasnt a case of, America Brute Travels Abroad; Appalled English Not Universally Spoken. Rather, I did attempt to use my very limited French, but to no avail. I observed rud...

Touring Paris - Day 2
Europe, France, Paris, Travelogue

Hello from Day 2 in Paris. Today was the first day of our sightseeing and running around town. We bought one of those city bus tours that takes you around town with interesting commentary about the sites. Ordinarily I might eschew such touristy pursuits, but its a great way to get the layout of the City and decide where you want to spend more time. Because you can jump on and off for two days, its also convenient and inexpensive transportation around town. The Metro, Paris' subway, is also...

Hello from Paris! - Day 1
Europe, France, Paris, Travelogue

Picking up where the blogs left off, at this point were plausibly in Paris arriving from Dublin. We took an early morning flight on RyanAir, the Southwest Airlines of Europe. RyanAir is one of the biggest airlines in Europe, and moves more passengers internationally (mostly between London and Dublin) than any other airline in the world. Flights are cheap; fares from Dublin and Paris start at 10 Euro. Our flight was about 25 Euro. We flew from Dublin into Paris Beauvais, which isn't real...

The Sartorialist in Paris
Europe, France, Paris

One of the more gratifying things I learned on this trip is that the American tourist is by far no longer the most obnoxious in Europe. That title goes to the Russians, hands down. Case in point in this example. I'm really curious to know why he thought it would be ok to wear this, especially to visit Notre Dame, a functioning Catholic church. I missed the best part moments later, when he was standing in the rain eating a foot long hot dog and spilling mustard on his shirt. ...

Hello from Paris!!
Europe, France, Paris

Just a quick note from Paris. Having a great time and seeing it all. Internet is hard to come by, and at 45 Euro per day from the hotel, I have decided to post these blogs when I get back to the UK on Friday. Plus with this crazy European keyboard, it has taken me 25 minutes just to type this. Au revoir for now, check back later. Cheers, KPK
