Kansas Defeats Memphis 75-68 in Overtime to Win NCAA Title
April 07, 2008
Not much more to say other than what I've said in the title. In a welcome change of fate, poor free throw shooting doomed a team other than the Jayhawks. The story of the game, however, is what will likely be remembered as the most important shot in recent Kansas history, Chalmers' 3 pointer to tie the game with 2 seconds remaining. Kansas was down by 9 and started the usually annoying desperation maneuver of intentionally fouling to send their opponent to the line. This time, however, Memphis missed 4 of 5 free throws to allow KU's improbable comeback, carrying the momentum into an overtime win.
The press had a good time spotting Roy Williams in the crowd emblazoned with a KU sticker. Ironic, given that it now seems Bill Self will likely head back to his alma mater to coach their team just as Roy did after losing the title to Syracuse 5 years ago.
A great win to be sure, and according to my sister all of Lawrence is shut down tomorrow in celebration.
Rock Chalk Jayhawk!
