In the Fall of 2008, we had traveled to Granada to attend a friend's wedding in nearby Mijas, off the coast of southern Spain. Originally we thought we might venture down to Gibraltar, for no reason other than a chance to use our passports (again) to visit the overseas British territory. However, after picking up our rental car in Granada, we realized we were only an hour away from on of the Wonders of the Ancient World and instead made an impromptu detour to tour the Alhambra, built in the 1300s as the Moorish capitol of the Islamic conquests of southern Europe. It was such an amazing place, and a great example of keeping your itinerary open and flexible while traveling.
