Waiting in Line at Sushi Dai

Asia, Japan, Tokyo

A great way to spend your morning after a visit to the Tsujiki Fish Market in Tokyo is a sushi breakfast at the lengendary Sushi Dai. The restaurant has been in business for over 70 years, and lays a credible claim to some of the freshest fish in Tokyo, bought nearby at the bustling market. We ordered two chefs' choice meals, a ten item meal and a seven item meal. The fatty tuna and salmon were the best, while the live crab (the flesh still moves) and sea urchin were not my favorites.

The restaurant is a bit of a tourist draw for sure. Jetlagged overseas travelers have no trouble getting up and getting to the market by the 5:30AM start, ourselves included. The food was terrific, and as skilled as I'm sure the chefs are, the freshness of the product due to their proximity to the source also goes a long way.

Standing in line around 6:30AM

Diners packed along a narrow counter.
