TV the Old Fashioned Way...

Technology, Television

I'm still having woeful troubles with my DirecTV service. Although the receiver picks up satellite TV just fine, it cannot download and retain the programming information necessary so I can 1) know what's on TV and 2) program the DVR to record shows. If the unit doesn't know what's on, it can't record the shows I ask it to. I can instruct it to record via the Internet, from my phone and a variety of other novel features, but unless the machine knows what's on, its really pointless.

I was able to get OnDemand working, but it will only download the little preview that describes how great OnDemand is, but not the actual programming guide or programs. Finally, I have no local channels, nor do I get the main networks in HD. For that, I have to use the over the air antennae, tuned by old TiVo box. That's right, despite all this technology, I'm relying on rabbit ears.

I've gotten pretty familiar with DirecTV tech support lately (I've called them no fewer than 8 times in the past week). They're sending me a new receiver via FedEx, should be here by Tuesday. We'll see what happens next. Its getting a little old. Until then, I'll be on the roof, in the 65 mile-per-hour winds attempting to adjust the signal...
